Kaare Ness is a true pioneer of the modern fishing industry in Alaska. Born in Norway on the island of Karmøy in 1928, he began his fishing career at an early age when his basic education was interrupted by World War II. Due to diminishing stocks, the glory days of herring fishing soon came to an end in Norway. Kaare immigrated to the United States in the early 1950s and started fishing in New Bedford, Mass. He tried his luck with scallops, and earned enough money to buy his own boat after several years of success. When the fishery in the Northeast started to deplete, Ness took an exploration trip to Alaska to investigate the possibility of relocating there. After a successful introduction to the fishermen in Alaska and seeing the prospects for a healthy business environment, Ness had his boat shipped across country to the Bering Sea to focus to the burgeoning industry of king crab fishing. This was a significant move for Ness and his wife, Sigrund, to relocate the family to the wilds of this untamed region. It was in Alaska where he met a young, energetic fisherman by the name of Chuck Bundrant and together they formed a partnership. Ness co-founded Trident Seafoods with Bundrant, and together they developed one of the largest and most successful fishing companies along the West Coast, reaching from Seattle to the Aleutian Islands.
It was in the early 1970s that these two fisherman innovated the entire industry by building the first fishing/processor boat. Today, the boat is still the standard of the industry. Through hard work, integrity, clever management and some good luck, the two partners grew Trident Seafoods to become the billion-dollar business it is today.
