DVD - Henrik Ibsen - Father of Modern Drama Steinar Hybertsen, Shybert Productions and the Norwegian American Foundation have produced a documentary based on Henrik Ibsen and his contribution to modern theatre. The film is a journey through his life, starting with his beginnings in Skien, Norway, and following him through his time in Denmark, Germany, Italy and back again.
Due to his self-imposed exile for 27 years, Ibsen wrote most of his plays abroad. The documentary thus follows him through stays in Dresden, Munich, Gossensass, Rome, Sorrento, Amalfie and Ischia. His personal correspondence from these locations provides viewers with insight into the experiences and impulses important to him, and helps to answer important questions about his constant travel. In fact, he did not have a permanent home until his 1891 return to Olso, and he never saw his family after he left Skien at age 19. The documentary also focuses on the incredible changes in Europe from 1828 to 1906—transformations that were reflected in most of Ibsen's work. The political arena during this time underwent constant modifications, and Ibsen himself lived in the middle of many revolutions while in Italy and Spain and witnessed firsthand the formation of modern political and social structure. This gave him and his work insight into the challenges and problems which would soon emerge after such monumental changes.
In addition, the documentary briefly analyzes the 28 different plays from Ibsen's productive life, specifically focusing on Peer Gynt, Et Dukkehjem and Hedda Gabler and how these plays were received on the world stage. Furthermore, the film will discuss those first stage performances which earned Ibsen money. He was most successful in Germany where he lived for 17 years—Brand was the most played piece at the time.
The documentary also features information about the pieces of Ibsen's work which were forbidden in certain families and thereby caused him to receive several negative reviews in the press. Regardless, success came to him after 40 years of writing and Ibsen was and is considered the father of modern drama. The first films produced in the United States based on Ibsen's plays gained attention in 1915, and many more were introduced before the advent of movies with sound.
Toril Moi, Professor at Duke University, will play a part in presenting the story of Henrik Ibsen in this documentary, along with Juni Dahr, Vigdis Ystad, Merete Morken Andersen, Joan Templeto, a historian from Germany and a historian from Italy.
The film's running time is 75 minutes and is available for $19.95.

Book - Beyond the Cold: An American's Warm Portrait of Norway What effect does a year spent in another country have on a child? Is it just another year in his childhood no different than any of the others? Can it influence his future endeavors, work, opinions, relations with people? What happens when he returns to that country as an adult? Can he adopt a culture not his own? Michael Kleiner takes us on his interesting and unique journey in Beyond the Cold: An American's Warm Portrait of Norway (Infinity Publishing), from living in Norway as an 11-year old with his family to returning for the first time 16 years later as an adult through five more visits. Writing in a journal style with warmth, sensitivity, humor, caring, and insight, Kleiner shows how he develops a strong affinity, appreciation and passion for Norway, its culture, beauty and people. As the story progresses, he moves beyond the wonderful reunions with friends and descriptions of his travels around the country, to commenting on Norwegian and American societies. This timeline from childhood to adulthood makes the book different than usual travel essay type books which are written only from adult perspectives.

Finding Thea - DVD Finding Thea, sponsored in part by the Norwegian American Foundation, is the story of Thea Foss, a 19th century Norwegian immigrant to the Pacific Northwest who became the inspiration for the fictional heroine Tugboat Annie and creator of the Pacific's largest tugboat empire. In 1889, the year Washington achieved statehood, Norwegian immigrant Thea Christiansen Foss arrived in Tacoma on the newly opened Northern Pacific Railroad.
With transportation limited to train, horse-drawn buggies, and boats, Thea quickly recognized a business opportunity in the growing demand for water travel. Beginning with an initial $5 purchase of a rowboat, the marine transport business she and her husband Andrew founded on the Tacoma waterfront has grown over more than a century into the largest, most modern fleet of tugs on the West Coast.
Through her life and work, Thea Foss became a pioneer archetype for women in the first half of the twentieth century. In 1931, Thea became the inspiration for a fictional character in Norman Reilly Raine's famed “Tugboat Annie” stories published in the Saturday Evening Post. These popular tales led to three Hollywood motion pictures and a 1950's television series.
Finding Thea separates the woman from the myth. It combines rare archival footage, photos, and clips from the 1933 Tugboat Annie film starring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery with contemporary reflections of her legacy along Washington State's waterfronts. As Historian Michael Sullivan states, the film explores “a rich story about a very generous person who you love to see win” as well as “the story of a woman immigrant, head of a family who built an empire without being an empire builder.”

CD & Music Book: Norse Fiddle at the Wedding This is sweet listening, as well as a source for the wedding couple choosing music for their celebration. The CD and music book for Hardanger fiddle or violin present tunes from traditional Norwegian to arrangements and compositions with the American wedding in mind—for a happy upbeat event. Historically, Norwegian country weddings were elaborate affairs that lasted up to a week. Music of the Hardanger fiddle (called hardingfele in Norwegian) led the initial procession from the bride's home to church, and then the feasting and dancing afterwards. Nowadays, couples want an element of the wedding to acknowledge their national origin, even when everything else is characteristic of an “American” ceremony. Whether planning a wedding or not, you'll love Karen Torkelson Solgård's haunting sound of the Hardanger fiddle, Norway's national instrument.

Book - Following the Waters, Voices from the Final Norwegian Emigration By Astrid Tollefsen A courageous book about courageous people! A premiere oral history that critics and readers love on both sides of the Atlantic. It chronicles the lives of 20th century Norwegian emigrants: Brooklyn - New Bedford, Massachusetts where they founded the scallop industry, improved the fishing industry and helped bring the port of New Bedford to #1 today. Some emigrants moved on to Seattle/Alaska fisheries and began/developed scalloping and brought crab fishing into preeminence.
This emigration, marked by great courage and fraught by loss of life at sea, brought great wealth to some while others suffered unimaginable losses of life and limb. In the tradition of the “pendlers” the families often kept their own traditions, skills, lifestyles and culture. This life pattern with its courage, daring sea rescues, strength, faith, history and loss -- in addition to the history and traditions of Norway, the New Bedford area and WWII life -- are emphasized throughout this book. The author's search for her Norwegian identity after the childhood loss of her fishing captain father at sea, is interwoven in this book. Subsidized by major Norwegian organizations, Kommune, a consulate and private donors. Foreword by Lars Fure, Norwegian Ambassador to Central America.
Reader friendly, 400+ photos and illustrations. Very readable print. Professionally edited/designed. Hard cover/ dust cover. 7'/10' 512 pps. 22 chap. 12 culture/heritage chapters, + new mini-chapter, large bibliography, notes, and appendix.

Book - Reckless Courage: The True Story of a Norwegian Boy Under Nazi Rule By William Fuller with Jack Haines
Full of engaging anecdotes and inspirational stories, Reckless Courage portrays the warmth, humor, and persistence of a Norwegian family during the German occupation of World War II. The book centers on the exploits of young Gunnar Høines, working as an errand boy at a hotel housing German officers. A wealth of historical detail does much to counter the virtually unrecognized importance of Norway in World War II. There are some intriguing observations. The impetuous decision to invade Norway eventually cost Hitler the war. A Norwegian colonel, disobeying orders, changed the course of history. Norway's world monoply on "heavy water" gave Germany a false sense of security in nuclear research: a crucial factor in its failure to make an atomic bomb.
William Fuller, a graduate of Harvard College and Business School, spent his career in finance. He has traveled extensively in Norway and has had a lifelong interest in 20th century European history.
Jack Haines was a member of Milorg, the organized Norwegian resistance, and delivered machine guns in the Stavanger region. After the war, he served in the elite 100-man King's Guard before emigrating to America. His exceptional recall of the occupation years, family life, and his younger brother's exploits make a delightful and fascinating story.

Book - Oslo in April By John Slade This novel, set in Norway, follows eight musicians from early morning on the first Saturday in April, to the symphony concert which they perform that evening in the Oslo Concert House. They live very different lives, and confront a range of challenges through the day, but each musician is directed toward that special moment in the evening when, together, they will enter the musical world which they deeply love. The reader follows each of these eight characters as they move, and interact, from dawn until the concert's finale.
Each of the musicians prepares for a three-part concert that evening: Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, a portrait of anguish; Rossini's William Tell Overture, a portrait of resilience; and Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto, a portrait of triumph. Oslo in April moves as well through these three stages. It is a story about people helping people, about people at their best.

VHS - Alf Engen Utah's Athlete of the Century Ladystone Productions, Inc. Steinar Hybertsen: Producer Steinar Hybertsen and Donna Sandahl: Co-directors Antony Cooper: Editor Music: Secret Garden Ole Edvard Antonsen
Utah ski legend Alf Engen is often credited as the man who put Utah on the international ski map. While still in his teens, he was already an established ski jumper and a promising soccer player in his native Norway. After the death of his father, Alf immigrated to America where his mother, Martha, and younger brothers, Sverre and Corey, joined him. Each of the Engen bothers made his mark on America in his own distinctive way, and for each, skiing in the American West was at the very core.
He hadn't realized when leaving Norway that America would have "ski jumping or even snow." He chose to settle in Utah, a state he loved and in which he was beloved. He often proudly remarked that Alta "has the best snow in the world." After five decades of dreams coming true, Alf earned the prestigious Athlete of the Century award for the state of Utah. This is the story of the astonishing career of a man both proud and humble, a great athlete, husband and father, a man who never forgot his Norwegian roots but who, in his own words, felt "honored to be an American."
